At first, it was just another long run. A run completed without stopping or taking any walk breaks. That in and of it's self was amazing. But I just saw it as another long run.

The reality that I can run a Half-Marathon hit me as I was crossed the imaginary finish line of my long run. I was sore. My knees were complaining and my legs felt like jello. But I now know that I can run the Half. The fear or not being able to do it is gone. But I can do it!

I'm going to complete my first Half-Marathon in 14 days!

11 Miles...I think I'm nuts.

Friday night I ran my 11 mile run! I’m still amazed at how I’m able to do this. I know you have heard me say this before, but I never thought I would ever be a runner. Let alone a long distance runner. It’s funny and almost scary how things change.

So, about the run. Well, the first 2.75 miles were uneventful. The only thing that was on my mind was I should have worn my long sleeve shirt. It was 63 and a little breezy, so I was a tad cold. But just under the 3 mile mark, something happened. I couldn’t believe that it happened, but it did. A bird crapped on my head!

Luckily, I was wearing a hat, but moments before I had taken the hat off to adjust it. I had just put it back on my head when I felt some thing hit the bill of the hat. Curious as to what hit my hat (really thinking it was a bug or something), I took off my hat to check it out. Sure enough, there it was. Bird Crap!

Well, at least it didn’t hit my face while I had my hat off. It really wasn’t a big deal and it didn’t affect my run, so I continued on.

For the next several miles, it was pretty peaceful. Nothing really exciting happened, it was just me running and enjoying being out there. That was until I realize that I had to use the restroom. Even though I went before leaving the house, I had this feeling that I really had to go.

Thankfully, I was only about a half mile from Port-a-Potty that is located on the trail that I run. So, I made a quick stop and continued on. However, the sensation of needing to go started right back up a mile or so down the road. I told myself I need to make it home, because I’m not turning around.

After a few minutes, I was started debating about jumping behind a tree or brush. Although the sensation was there, it really wasn’t getting stronger, just really annoying and it made me think about it. Then, out of nowhere, it dawned on me. My water belt felt a little tight, too. As soon as I loosened the belt, the sensation went away and I was back to running free of that thought.

As I passed the 9.5 mile mark, things started to break down. Twice I started walking without thinking, “I think I’m going to walk now.” I didn’t make it more than a few strides before I was yelling at myself to keep going. Then at the 10 mile mark, I actually started walking. But not 20 seconds after I started walking, I asked myself why I was walking. I was so close the end; I knew I could make it a little more. So, I started running again.

Then it happened the first time. There was twinge was in my left calf muscle. Not a cramp, but one of the pre-cramp twinges that you get right before a leg cramp.

I started praying.

Side Note: Every time before I start my run, I say a prayer. I pray that the Lord keeps me safe, from injury, animals, cars, etc. I also ask that he gives me the strength and motivation to keep going.

So, after the twinge, I asked him to help me make it the last half mile. I started praying the Our Father and the Hail Mary over and over. I got the second twinge about 1/5 of a mile from the finish. It was a little bigger, but I still just kept running, praying that it would not cramp up until the end. Thankfully, it didn’t cramp up at all.

I finished in 2 hours and 20 minutes. After my cool down, I stretched out and took an ice bath followed by a nice warm shower.

However, I did realize I had let myself become dehydrated. Because it was really cool out (and the episode with the water belt) I didn’t drink as much as I should. Which is what I think did me in. When I did start thinking about the need to drink more water around mile 8, it was probably too late.

Lesson learned: Stay Hydrated!

9.5 - WOW!!!

On Labor Day, I ran 9.5 miles. It was a beautiful morning and I prayed that I would have a good run.

The night before, I thought about how I was going to run the entire 9.5 miles. When I ran the 8 miles two weeks ago, I had to start run/walking after 4 miles into the run. I had decided to run 1 mile, then walk for a minute and repeat throughout the run.

But when I started warming up, I decided to run 3 miles and then see how I felt. If I felt okay, I would continue running. If something seemed off, as was the case two weeks before, I would walk a couple minutes and go from there.

It was a perfect morning. The sun was still under the horizon, but there was enough light that I didn’t have to run in the dark. About a mile into my run I saw two groups of deer, one group of 4 and another group of 3. About half mile past that, I saw two more pair of deer run across the path in front of me.

At the 3 mile mark, I was feeling pretty good. So, I had some goo and kept running. The next 3.5 miles was run near a lake. The trail goes in and out of a wooded area. At this point the sun was starting to rise over the horizon. Sounds of bugs gave way to sounds of birds, ducks and geese.

About 4 miles into the run I saw a group of wild turkey cross about 100 yards in front of my path. I was hoping to get a close up view, but they saw me and went off into the woods. Between Mile 4 and 5 I saw some ducks fly over head, about 6 more deer and another group of turkey, including some baby turkeys. Seeing all the animals really took my mind off the running.

As I approached the 6.5 mile mark I was still feeling good. Not as strong as I was at the 3 mile mark, but far from feeling the need to walk. I had some more goo and kept running. Things were feeling good and before I knew it I was at the 7.5 mile mark. I remember looking up and seeing where I normally turn around on my 3 mile runs and thinking to myself, “If I can make it there, I’m home free!”

When I got to the 8 mile mark is when things started to get tough. I don’t know if it was subconscious or if I really started to break down. I wouldn’t call it hitting the wall, I just felt I was getting close to it. So, I started picking an object about a quarter of a mile away and telling myself, “If I can make it there, I can go another quarter mile.”

That got me almost to the end. With only two tenths of a mile to go, I almost broke down. I just put my head down and started chanting, “One more step, one more step.” That last little bit felt like it took longer then the previous mile, but I finished running.

It feels really great to have completed the 9.5 miles non-stop. It has renewed my confidence and told me I can run the Half-Marathon!!!

8 Miler!!!

If you would have asked me a year ago if I though I would ever run 8 miles, I would have thought it was crazy. However, that is what I did on Sat. morning.

I haven't been running much the past couple of weeks do to some pain, but Friday I felt good and decided to run Sat. morning. Although I was planning on only running 3 miles, I followed my wife's suggestion, "If you feel good, keep running." After 3 miles I still felt really good, so I kept running and ended up running 8 miles.

I did do some walking, but I'm not worried about it. I got in the distance and I feel good about it. My legs where a little sore after the run, but that's was probably going to happen any ways, since I hadn't ran in a week and half.

This morning I got up and ran at 5:00. I would have loved to sleep in, but now that I can run again, I got to get back into the swing of things. The next increase in my long runs will be 8/31. I will be running 9.5 miles!

Pain = No Running

Well, I've had my share of ups and downs and even though I hoped this wouldn't happen during my training for the Half, but it did.

What started as what felt like a sore ankle, feels like a very low shin splint on my right leg. It had gotten to a point where if I sat for a while, then got up to walk, it was really sore for the first several steps. I could still run and the pain wasn't too bad and only lasted the first few minutes of the run. But, I decided to take last week off from running.

This week I will attempt to run Wed, Fri and Sat. I'm going to repeat last week, as to not miss any of the training.

Wish me luck!

Where have I been?

One word... Wii

I've been asked where I've been and how is my running. Well, we recently got a Wii and in the evenings we tend to play with the Wii instead of surfing the net. So, I haven't been updating the blog as much.

To get everyone up to speed of the last couple weeks, I have been running. My 5 miler did not do me in. I didn't run on Tuesday this week, because I think I rolled my ankle somehow over the weekend. Other than that, I have made every run.

This past Saturday I did 6.5 miles. It was my longest run yet and the first time I tried using a GU or gel. I tried GU Espresso Love and Chocolate. I could barely get down the Espresso Love, but loved the Chocolate! I got a Vanilla GU pack to try next week. We'll see how that tastes.

I'm sorry I haven't posted anything the past couple weeks, but I'll try to at least post something once a week. It's the Wii - it's so addicting!

The 5 Mile Run

I did it!!!! I ran 5 miles non-stop today!!!

I got up at 6:00am and it was a beautiful morning. I took it slow and easy and had fun with it.

I saw a doe and her two fawns. Lots of rabbits and birds. I saw the sun glistening off the lake. I even saw the downtown buildings through the trees.

I will say that I was tired after the run. I even took a nap later in the afternoon and still feel a little tired. Instead of using water, I used a 50/50 mix of Gatorade and water. I wonder if that is not enough. I will say I do not eat in the mornings before I run. It has been hot here quickly and I run no later than 6:00am to beat the heat. Need to figure out what to do about that, If I'm as tired next week after my run. Maybe start with a 75/25 mix.

Anyways. I did it.

By the way, here is what next week is going to look like. The first 3/4 of a mile, my body was complaining that I wasn't still in bed. However, I reached the 1 mile mark before I knew it and noticed my breathing wasn't as labored as normal.

I actually had a really nice run. I was day dreaming for most of the run! The majority of my runs so far have been me focusing on what I was doing; how's my breathing or slowing down, because I was going too fast or speeding up, because I knew I was going slower than normal.

This morning I just ran. What a great feeling!

Hornets

I just have to post this!!!

As a young child I slid onto a Yellow Jacket nest and was stung 23 times. I will never forget that day and as such, I am now deathly afraid of all bees and hornets.

As I was sitting on the back porch of my brother-in-law's house, I was buzzed by a hornet. Then he buzzed me again. Trying to stay calm, I slowly stood up. As I did I realized it was not one, but several hornets! I'm talking 7 or 8! So, being deathly afread, I run for the door hoping they will leave me alone. I almost open the door, when I thought I can't let them in.

So I turn around to walk around the house, when I saw a lot more swarming the chair I was just sitting in!

After they went away (or I thought) I went back out to get the laptop. When I grabbed the laptop, I looked down and through the slats of the chair (THE ONE I WAS JUST SITTING IN) I saw the nest! It is under the chair.

I was lucky and I'm not going back out there!

First 4 Mile Run!!!!!!

Well, this morning I'm sitting on the back porch of my brother-in-law's house in Chicago. I'm enjoying the beautiful morning, before it heats up to the mid 90s again.

This morning I got up at 6:00 am to go for my first official "long run". I call it my first official long run, because 1. it is the longest I have ever run in my life 2. starting now, my weekends are going to include a run longer than my weekday runs.

Before I came to Chicago, I used mapmyrun.com to map out two routes I could choose from this morning. One was a one mile loop, while the other was a two mile loop. In the 7 hours that it took to drive to Chi-Town, I decided on running the two mile loop. Even though it is was a little more hilly, I thought it would be easier for me to stop after 3 miles running the one mile loop.

So here's how it went. Excellent! That pretty much sums it up. I was nervous last night about being in a car for 7 hours, then running this morning. But when I started my warm up, I was felling pretty good. Also, although it was a hilly run, the up hills were not straight up hill. It would go up a little, then level off, go up a little, then level off, etc. So the hills in the first three miles didn't seem bad at all.

Starting the last mile was mentally kind of tough. I could tell my body was like, "Wait! What is going on! We have never ran this far before!" I asked the Lord to be with me and to give me the mental strength to make it to the end and he delivered! At about a quarter of a mile into the 4th mile, there was a pretty big hill. Okay, it might not be that big or even really be classified as a hill, but in my mind it was really big. I slowed a little, trying to keep my effort level the same, as I had done throughout the entire run. I kept telling my self, "All I need to do is make it to the top and it will be all down hill from there."

I reached the top before I knew it and the run was done too before I knew it. It was a great run! I felt good throughout and got lost in thought a couple times. I'm even looking forward to my 5 mile run next Saturday!!!

Happy 4th of July!!!

Sorry I haven't posted anything yet this week. With everything going on, I just haven't had a lot of time.

So, this week has gone alright. The alarm did not go off on Tuesday at 5:00 am, so I was forced to run at 2:00 in the afternoon. 91 degrees, 58% humidity. Even though I tried to tough it out, a little over 1.5 miles I was forced to walk. I tried run/walking for a bit, but ended up walking about a 3rd of my 3 mile run.

Today was better, at least the alarm went off, so I was able to run in the morning. I felt more tired then normal. I had some beers last night, in celebrating the 4th, but I drank lots of water in between the beers. However, I think the real issue was that I gave blood yesterday.

Side note: Giving blood for me is a big deal. I have not done it for a long time, because I do not like needles. But while we were at the store, the mobile bus was there and we decided to give blood.

The nurse told me I would be okay to run, but play it by ear as I might not feel the same. Any ways, it wasn't too bad of a run and it was a nice morning. I even saw a baby deer this morning!

I'm driving to Chicago tomorrow night to help my brother-in-law get some things ready for their soon to arrive baby! But, I'm still going to try very hard to get up early and get my run in on Sat. I hope to get in a four mile run. It will be my first four miler ever!

Well, that's it for now. Here is what next week is going to look like, depending on how Sat. goes:

Mon: Rest/XT
Tue: 3 Miles
Wed: Rest/XT
Thu: 3 Miles
Fri: Rest/XT
Sat: 5 Miles
Sun: Rest/XT

Change in Training Plan

So, since it has been really hot and humid here, I have decided to start running in the mornings.

Tiffany (my wife) and I go to the gym every Mon, Wed and Friday. I use to run while she was working out at the gym, but now I will use these days to focus on cross training. To tell the truth, I haven't been doing much XT lately.

So I will run Tuesday, Thursday and Sat. mornings. Three good things should come of this.

1. Since I'm still going to go to the Gym on Mon., Wed. and Friday, I will get my XT in.
2. Running in the mornings will be a ton cooler, then running a 4:00 PM.
3. Once my long runs get up there, running them on Sat. will be easier than fitting it in on Friday. Even though at some point I was planning on doing my long runs on Sat.

I've also decided to make Sun. an official rest day. No running or XT. I wonder if this will help me get out of yard work as well....hmmm....

Any way, here's what the rest of this week looks like:

Wed: XT
Thu: 3 Miles
Fri: XT
Sat: 3 Miles
Sun: Rest

The heat was deadly today!!

Well, I guess I'm going to have to face the fact I will need to starting getting up before 5am for my runs. My past few runs have been run in almost 90 degree weather. Today it was 93 with 49% humidity! I was looking forward to my run all day and was actually feeling pretty good the first part of the run. I planned to run 2.5 miles today, but a little over 1.75, I was forced to walk.

There was about a half mile were there was no shade. All of a sudden, I felt drained. I even purchased a Nathan QuickDraw Plus water bottle, to make it easier to carry and drink water. I also, made sure that I drank lots of water today, since I knew it was going to be the hottest weather I had ever ran in. Needless to say, neither precaution helped.

Although I was forced to walk, twice, I did complete the 2.5 miles. Considering the weather, I think it went alright. I just need to start running in the morning. The only issue is getting up a hour earlier each day.

Anyone have any tips for getting motivated to get out of bed in the morning?

As if having to run in 90+ degree weather isn't motivation enough.

Half-Marathon Progress Report - 17 weeks To Go!

3 MILES!!!

Well, I'm back up to 3 miles again. I was suppose to run 2.5, but just forgot my route. I think I need to look into getting a GPS unit again. Last week was really nice, because my shin splints were starting to fade away. Monday and Wednesday's runs were really good. During the runs I could tell that my shins were getting better and I knew that it was only a matter of time until they were 100%.

Friday's run on the other hand was really tough. I decided to run over lunch, because we had dinner plans Friday night. The first thing I had to deal with was the temperature. It was the hottest day of the year so far and no clouds in the sky. The second thing was hills. The route that I took had four major level changes. Although, it was a very hard run, I think the hills have helped to strengthen my legs. The muscles in my legs are starting to pop out!

So about this week. This week is on to a great start! No Pain!!! Although I never thought of my shin splint pain as being bad, there was a lot of discomfort during the start and cool down of my runs. Tonight, I didn't have any pain. I forgot what it was like to have your legs feel almost refreshed after a run. I had very very little discomfort during my warm up and nothing during or after my run!

We'll see how the rest of the week goes. Here is the plan for this week:

Mon: 2 Miles
Tue: Rest/XT
Wed: 2.5 Miles
Thu: Rest/XT
Fri: 3 Miles
Sat & Sun: Rest/XT

Half-Marathon Progress Report - Week 19

Well, last week went pretty good. Shins were still bothering me a little, but the are feeling good much better.

Friday's run was amazing. The weather was perfect and I felt myself getting back into being able to run and breath at the same time. I completed a 2 mile run that felt really good. At about the 1.5 mile mark, I was breathing really good and feeling like I could run miles. I thought about running more than 2, but knew I should stop. After the run, my Shins ached, so I didn't do anything over the weekend.

This morning my shins they felt fine. As a matter of fat, the felt the best they have in the past few weeks. The is good news. This evening I run 1.5 miles, following my cutting back plan. My Shins felt fine, but it was hot and humid. It was 86 when I got done with my run. It was a challenge to run in hot weather, but it will prepare me for future races this summer.

Here is what the rest of this week will look like:

Tue: Rest/XT
Wed: 2 Miles
Thu: Rest/XT
Fri: 2.5 Miles
Sat & Sun: Rest/XT

I've been iPodified

by my wife

Shins Feeling Better

I ran my planned 1.5 miles last night. Although my shins did hurt the first few minutes, it quickly went away. The discomfort came back during my cool down, but after some stretching, it went a away again. I iced them for about 15 minutes and that seems to really be helping.

I going to rest today as planned, in hopes my shins will be even better for my run on Friday, which will be a 2 mile run. The place where I'll be doing more of my running has some hills. I think that's good, since it will prepare me for races with hills. I think it may even make me stronger.

Still taking these next weeks easy. I am going to try to run mainly outside again. For the couple weeks before I got the Shin Splints I was running on a treadmill. Someone even told me yesterday the shin splints could have came from running on a treadmill. He said whenever he runs on a treadmill, he gets them. Something about running at the same speed the whole workout and not having a log of room to move? I don't know, but since I'm planning on running a long race on the road, I think it would be best to train for it by run outside.

That's it for now.

Half-Marathon Progress Report - 20 Weeks

In 20 weeks, I will hopefully be running my first half marathon. From now until the race, I will try to post at least a weekly report on how my progress is going.

Here is this week's report:

After trying to get back into the swing of things, I now have a mild case of shin splints. I started icing and massaging them and took a few days off from running. I'm also going to cut back my running and try to ease back up to 3 miles over the next 3 weeks.

Here's what happened. Leading up to the Arbor Day 5k, I missed a lot of runs. Then the Arbor Day 5k proved to be a very hilly course, which took a lot out of my legs. After two weeks of rest I tried to jump back into running. Although I did lower my runs to 1.5 miles the first week, 2 the next and 2.5 last week, I now have shin splints.

I took a few days off to let them heal a bit and did a short mile this evening. I've been massaging my calves and legs, stretching and icing to promote healing, so hopefully the shin splints will not stay around too long.

Because of the shin splints, I'm cutting back a bit for the next few weeks.

Here is the plan for this week:

Mon: 1 Mile
Tue: Rest/XT*
Wed: 1.5 Miles
Thu: Rest/XT
Fri: 2 Miles
Sat: Rest/XT
Sun: Rest/XT

*XT = Cross training i.e. swimming, cycling, strength training, walking, yoga or aqua running... On April 28th, I ran my second 5k. It was the Nebraska City 5k Trail Run in Nebraska City, Nebraska. It was the first time I had ran anywhere that had hills. On with the report!

We got down to the starting line a little after 8:00 am. It was a beautiful morning. A bit cold when we first got up, but it was perfect weather for a run. I really didn't have any prerace fears or jitters this time. It was really different then the first race.

Going into this race, I was not thinking about a PR. Actually, I was thinking it was going to take a lot longer, because there were hills on this course. I was hoping to finish in under 40 minutes, but would have been happy with a sub 45 minute finish. Even though I wasn't trying to PR, I still wanted to do the best I could.

I read somewhere the other day, that if you want to PR in your next 5k, go out stronger than normal in the beginning. Since I figured I wasn't going to be close to my normal pace, I would try that out, just to get a head start.

There weren't as many people there as there was at my first 5k, plus the race was a road this time and not a park trail. I found a place in the middle of the pack and waited with everyone else. There wasn't a PA system, so when the race director started yelling the instructions, everyone kind of filed in and moved closer to the start line, so they could hear. So, even though I was in the middle of the pack I was only a few people from the starting line.

We were off at 8:30 am. The first half mile was flat, but then we started up hill. The first hill was not too bad and I still tried to keep my faster-than-normal pace, but could tell I slowed down a little. Rounding the top of this small hill, I felt my pace pick up a bit more as we ran down the other side.

Unfortunately, it didn't last long. For the next mile, it was up hill. At first it was gradual and I eventually slowed to my normal pace. Then about a mile into the race, we were presented a very steep hill. I tried to keep pushing myself, but finally had to walk for a bit. After I caught my breath, I was back to running.

As we were approaching the top of the hill, there was a volunteer saying, “Almost to the top...all down hill from there!” I looked up and only 50 yards away was the top of the hill. “I made it,” I said with a big smile on my face. We rounded a corner and started down a hill toward the finish line. Running down hill again felt really good and I had a big grin, until a second volunteer said, “Just keep to the right and you'll loop back up this way.”

“What! Loop back up!?!” As we came around the bend, I could see the bottom of the slope and how it looped back up to the top of the hill. Instead of turning to the right and heading back toward the finish line, we turned left on to a road that took us back up the hill. But I kept running.

I made it the top of that hill before I had to stop and walk once more. I have always thought that having to walk would be a defeating feeling. But when I started walking, I just reminded myself that my goal was to finish...even if it meant walking the rest of the race. As I reminded myself of that, I saw a baby stroller roll by me. A few feet behind was the father. Since we were on level ground at that moment, he was shoving the stroller so it would glide in front of him. As he caught up to the stroller, he would do it again.

As he passed me, I started running again. I was actually feeling really good about the race and kept pushing on. We turned a corner and started running up an old brick driveway. This race went through part of an estate with this old mansion on it. I think the driveway we were on was the original road up to the house. It was lined with trees that overhung the road, and it was beautiful. Then I again had to walk. It was a steep grade, but at least I had a moment to take in the sites.

As I got up to the top of the hill, I started running again. As we ran around the house, we started running back down the way we came from. This time, I knew it was all downhill!

Let me just say this. It is hard running downhill! The thing is, when you start running downhill, your pace starts picking up. Before I knew it, I was running near full speed. Then it happened. A wheel from the baby stroller went flying off! Luckily, the guy was now holding on to the stroller (since we were going downhill.) He kept the stroller upright as his wife ran back, grabbed the wheel off the ground and snapped it back in only a few seconds. It was almost like they practiced for this sort of thing.

Anyway, after the trail leveled out, I had to walk once again. I hadn't noticed, but I was running as fast on the flat part as I was coming down the hill. I had to walk and catch my breath for a minute. I didn't walk long, because I looked up and I could see where the trail opened out of the trees. I started running again and as I emerged from the trees, I heard my family yelling. I heard my dad yell something like finish strong. I also heard my wife and my sister yelling. So I started running as fast as I could. I just remember running faster and faster, feeding off of the cheers. I then looked up at the clock and saw that it read 32 minutes and something. I pushed harder than I have ever ran before and finished in 32:41, almost a minute faster then my first 5k! As I was crossing the finish line I jumped up and touched the banner.

I slowed to a stop, then stood there gasping for air. My family and friends tried to talk to me, but I couldn't respond with words. I was so out of breath, all I could do was point to the refreshment stand. As I was walking to the direction of the refreshment stand someone said, “Nice kick at the finish.” I gave him a thumbs up and got something to drink and eat. After a minute or two, I walked back over to my family. My wife, sister, parents and in-laws were all there to cheer me on. It was amazing!

As we were standing there talking, a gentleman came up to me and asked me for my name and where I was from. As I gave him the info, my wife asked if he was with the local paper. He said, “Yep.” My dad then asked if my picture would be in it. He said, “Sure will.” I don't know if it ever was or not, but if you read the Nebraska City newspaper, let me know if you saw my picture!

The 5k Bug is Spreading!!!

I just wanted everyone to know that the 5k bug is spreading. Rest. The Arbor Day 5k was really hilly and I took a lot out of my shins. I tried running the Tuesday after the Race, but it hurt. So, I didn't run for awhile.

Last Friday I finally ran again and it felt okay. Monday felt better and yesterday felt good. Since I haven't been much lately and the hills took so much out of me, I cutting back a easing back up to 3 miles. This week I have been doing 1.5 mile runs. Over the next few weeks it will go to 2, 2.5, then 3 miles.

On to the important part...I just registered for my First Half-Marathon! That's right, I've paid the money and will have a number for the Des Monies Half-Marathon on Oct. 21st.

I know the last few weeks I haven't been able to post much. However, I'll try to post as often as I can and keep everyone on my progress towards the Half-Marathon.

4/28/07 - Arbor Day 5K

Getting there...

Who would have thought getting back on track would be so tough. Tuesday was not a great day. I only got a half mile into my run, then had to stop. At one point I felt faint. I really didn't feel sick or anything before hand, but I was running on a treadmill. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

On Thursday I was recovering. My coworkers took me out for some drinks and to shoot some pool, since my last day is Wednesday. Let's just say, someone (not me) had the idea of doing a round of shots. That wasn't the greatest thing to do, but then the second round just wasn't a smart idea at all.

However, I had a really great run today. I covered 3.04 miles. The best part is I have energy and my legs feel good.

I'm getting there, but it is slow. I'm running a 5k in two weeks and really need to get back to running three days a week.

Side note: I took an IQ test today and rated above average. Now I just need to get smart again about my running!

Back on track

From laziness, to an injury, to celebrating, I missed every run this week. That was until this afternoon - I decided it was time to get back on track.

It was really easy to get off track. I missed my Tuesday run, mainly, because I was lazy. Missed Wednesday's run due to a strange "pop" in my calf. Then I missed Saturday's run, because I was out celebrating my new job Friday night.

Before I knew it, it's Sunday and I realized I hadn't run all week. So, I went out running this evening, determined to get back on track.

I fell this week. I didn't run due to several reasons, but I got back up and ran. I was so scared that I wouldn't be able to do my 3 miler. I even thought about just doing 1.5, but it felt great to finish the whole 3 miles and it showed me I can still run!

It is not the fact that you fall that defeats you; it is the failure not to get up and get back on track.

No Running

So, I missed my Tuesday run, because I was lazy. I'm not going to go into the details, but I will tell you this week has been very stressful. Add to that, I haven't been eating well, not to mention that I have had more alcohol this week, then I think I had all last month! Side note, as a new year resolution, I have been trying to cut back to only a one or two drinks a week...if any. I also missed my last three workouts, including one run.

Last night I decided I was going to get back on track. So, this morning I had a healthy breakfast and went for my run. It was a very hard run. I could tell cheating on my diet this week, was not going to help me this morning. Lets just say I was not physically or mentally up to par for this run.

This morning during my run, I was touched by God. In the 30 minutes it took me to finish my run, I was mentally tore down and built back up again. It was very spiritual and I am very glad the Lord was with me on my run today.

Astronaut will run Boston Marathon...in space

That's right! The good thing is, I've been following the cut-back plan for the week.

I have been asked by a few people, why I haven't posted a Race Report for my recent 5k yet. Well, it is finally written and being featured on RunningIS.com!

In fact, Click Here to go to the story!

Not only will there be a story, but I have also been asked to do an over-the-phone interview for an upcoming Podcast. I'm really excited and can't wait to see how it turns out.

Check out the story and let me know what you think!

By the way, here is a slide show that my wife made of the race pictures. You would think that I would be excited or nervous, since I will be running my first 5k tomorrow. However, that is not the case. I figure now is the perfect time to tell you about the lows of running.

In running, you will have highs and lows. Highs are usually followed after a good training run or after a race. I have heard of people being on their running high for weeks, after they had run a marathon.

Unfortunately, you will also have lows. Lows usually come when you haven't run for a few days. Maybe your are sidelined due to an injury or your schedule just hasn't allowed you to get out there and run. Lows can come from running indoors due to weather or from just missing a few days.

Well, I had a great training run on Monday morning. I ran 2.8 miles, which at that point, was the longest run that I had ever completed. I was happy about the distance of the run and excited, because I knew that I would not have a problem with running the 5k this coming Saturday.

But towards the end of the run, my shins started feeling a little sore. I wouldn't call it pain, nor would I call it Shin Splints. However, I did not want to risk further injury by running. So, I decided that I would not run this week, until the 5k.

Monday and Tuesday I was still enjoying the high of the great training run. But on Wednesday morning, I felt something was missing. Something just didn't feel right. I then started thinking about going for a run come Wed. night. I really had to force myself not to run. My shin still felt a little sore and I didn't want to make it worse by going out and running.

Well, I have felt the low for three days now. I know that the race is tomorrow. I know that I will be able to complete the 5k, without any issues, but I still feel a little down.

I wanted to tell you this, because you too will have moments, days or maybe even weeks (if you are injured), where you will feel the lows. You just have to keep remembering the highs.

At first I kept a blog as a journal. I also record how I feel in my workout log. I suggest you start some kind of log or journal, so that when these lows hit, you will be able to review it and remind yourself what the high moments feel like.

What I Learned Today

So, the last time I was at the Dentist, my BP was 122/90.

For adults, your PB should be lower than 120/80. I must say, it wasn't the best run that I have had, but it was the longest one. The only major issue I had was my left shin felt a little sore. I wouldn't call it a shin-splint yet, but I might not run on Wed. as planned. I'll see how I feel then. I will run my first 5k on Sat. and I would rather take Wed. off and be able to run on Sat. then not be able to run the race.

Also, I'm going to follow some advice the was given to me and cut back next week. I have been building up my mileage since the first of the year. I figure I'll do three 1.5 mile runs next week, then start running 3 miles 3 days a week. However, I'll still need to build my Wed. mileage up to 3 miles. Right now I'm at 1.5, as an easy run.

All-in-all I feel good. I'm still really excited about the race and I know that I'll be able to finish! Best of all, I'm going to have a cheering section. My wife, little sister and some of our friends will be cheering for me at the finish line.

On the Run Thoughts

This afternoon was really stressful and I just really wanted to run when I got home. WHAT!?!? I just wanted to run? Is this really me that is thinking this? That's right, I found myself wanting to run. It's not like I have to force myself to run every time, but I've never found myself wanting to run, just to de-stress.

I had a really great run tonight. I wasn't supposed to run until tomorrow, but, like I said, I just wanted to run. Also, it looks like it might be raining tomorrow and this evening was really nice outside (52F). I felt good, so I decided to get it out of the way.

At around the 2 mile mark it hit me. I'm running. I'm in a rhythm. I'm not dying and I feel good. I'm day-dreaming and thinking about other things other than running. A big smile came across my face, and I felt my pace pick up a bit.

I ran 2.54 miles this evening. Not only am I excited about my first 5k next Sat., but now I know I can run it and finish.

If you are just starting out, go slow and keep with it. Rest when you need to and don't overdo it. Trust me, there comes a day when running is no longer forced. When that day comes: Man, does it feel good!

10.5 Minute Miles!

Tonight after getting home, I was really ready for a run. I know this weekend we ate at the Cheesecake Factory, but three pounds! The cool thing about it, my body fat is continuing to drop.

Even when I was at my lowest weight (195) this week, I was at 33.9% BF. That means I was 66 pounds of Fat. Well, I weighed in a 198.6 this morning, I was at 31.2% BF. That puts me at 61.96 pounds of body fat.

So, even thought my weight went up, it appears that I still lost over 4 pounds of fat!

I feel my motivation returning all ready.

Motivation Detour

My motivation this week has taken a detour. After reading up on and talking to people about the Omaha Half-Marathon, it seems to be really hilly for a first-timer.

After someone recommended that I run the Des Moines Half-Marathon as my first one, I read up on that race. It is a flat course that is advertised as First-Timer friendly.

Pros:
First-Timer friendly
Flat Course - enough said.
It's in the Fall - it will be cooler
Extra month of training - Can fit in some more smaller races

Cons:
I can't think of any.

So, I'm changing my Long-Term goal, to running the Des Moines Half-Marathon on Oct. 21, 2007.

CB Road Race - Post Race Report

That was a blast!!!

Weather: 18F - 22mph NW wind - Sunny - 1F wind chill

Not only was today my first race, but it was also the farthest I have ever ran!

I'm finding it hard to put into words what I feel. I'm excited, happy, high, joyful and supercalifragelisticexpeialidoshous (Mary Poppin's Song)!

So here's what happened:

Ten minutes before the race, I walked down the road a ways, to warm up a little. This is when I found out the road was a sheet of ice. I started having doubts,”I can barely walk on this road, let alone run!” Then I found that if I walk on the edge of the road, there was just enough snow, that you didn't slip and slide.

Coming back from my warm up, I noticed there was a restroom building a little ways from the parking lots. I started jogging toward it. Another runner said something to me as I passed. All of a sudden I was knee deep in snow. Then it clicked, he had yelled, “Deep Snow!” After a few steps I was out of the deep snow. However, to get back to the parking lot, I had to go through the snow again. I saw an area that looked shallow, but it was just as deep. I spent the next few minutes in the car with the heat blasting my feet and trying to get the snow chunks out of my shoes.

A few minutes later we were lining up for the race. There was 12 runners in all. Seven were running the two-mile race. The other five were running the 10K. We lined up at 10:00am in the freezing cold to do something fun. The race director asked everyone, what should we name this bunch. Some one yelled "The Crazy Dozen!" Crazy as it may seem, I had a great time.

The first ~300 yards the road was ice covered. I found that running on the side of the road was less slick, but took more energy running in the snow. I got behind someone wearing a yellow jacket that seemed to be running at my pace. But after a few minutes, I decide to pass her, because it just felt too slow. I know everyone says to go out slow, but it didn't feel right. After passing her, I got into my rhythm.

After the first ~300 yards, we turned onto a street that was mostly clean. This felt a lot better than running on the snow and ice. Thankfully, most of this road was clean. I did a mental check. Everything felt good, so I focused on my breathing, to keep my rhythm and pace. Before I knew it we were approaching the turn around point. This is when the two "fast runners" ran by us heading back to the start. About 50 yards from the 1 mile mark, the girl in the yellow jacket passed me. I just told myself, she went out slow as a warm up, then got up to her pace at the clean road. Either way, I didn't let it bother me.

I reached the turn around point and noticed I was feeling really good. Heavy breathing, but not uncomfortable. At that time I looked across the frozen lake to the parking lot. It looked so far way. It was empowering to see how far I had came and to know I still felt really good. Soon after, I started hearing foot steps behind me. I focused on them. The person didn't know it, but focusing on that sound helped the time really fly. I don't know why, but it did. Next thing I know, around the 1.75 mark, I starting wanting to walk. I think my body figured out that I had ran past 1.75 miles (the longest I had previously run before). At this point, the runner behind me decided to pass me.

About ~250 yards away was the turn back to the finish line. I just focused on making it to the turn. I knew if I could get to the turn, I'd be home free. So, I just focused on that turn. When I got there, something weird happened. My body, which had been complaining the past ~250 yards, changed it's mind. I saw the people at the finish. Then I saw my wife.

My wife told me to make sure I lowered my face mask when I got close, so she could get a good picture. So for the next ~200 yards, I just kept reminding myself, “Lower the mask when you get close.” When I was about ~100 yards from the finish line I lowered the mask. I then heard my wife cheering me on. I thought to myself, she wants a good picture, then she is going to get it. For the last ~100 yards, I sprinted as fast as I could! It felt great. I just focused on the cheers and kept pushing faster and faster. Once I crossed the finish line, I had it was a little difficult slowing down. When you're running as fast I you can, trying to stop on ice can be a bit tricky. At least I didn't fall on my face.

As I started walking back to where everyone was, I heard them yell out my time. Twenty-two minutes, nine seconds! That's over a minute faster than my training pace. Then the Race Director's helper, called me over and handed me a silver metal! I came in second place in my age group. Not only that, I was in fifth place over all!

Well, I had a lot of fun...and I think I'm addicted.

CB Road Race Pictures

| View Show | Create Your Own

Pre-Race Report

Okay, I have gone over what I'm going to wear. I'm excited about the race, however the weather is a different story. It is going to be 19F with winds at 22 mph!

I'm glad I ran out side a few weeks ago. It showed me what I needed to wear in cold weather. I got a running jacket last night, so hopefully that will cut down on the wind. I have something to cover my ears and I have some gloves. That's right, I did not stop. It took me just over 22 minutes. At the first of the year, I could barley run for a minute, let alone 22!

I realized today, why it feels harder to run on our treadmill than outside. It has a built-in incline. Even at it's lowest position, it is still at an incline. So, all this time, I've been running at a slight incline! No wonder it wasn't much harder to run outside.

Anyway, had a good run today.

Council Bluffs 13 Mile Road Run

Last night I found out there is going to be a two mile race in our area this weekend. The period is actually 46 days long, but we suspend Lent on Sundays, because they are the Lord's Day and should be days of celebration.

So, why do we give something up? The actual purpose behind giving something up, is to help us connect with the suffering of Jesus. When giving something up, you should make it count. Suddenly, giving up our favorite show or food doesn’t seem so trying in light of what Jesus endured, does it?

Well, this year, I'm giving up something and I'm making it count! After giving it much thought, I'm going to give up something that I really love and enjoy...Red Meat.

For those who know me, I love steak. Just a couple weeks ago, I was telling a coworker (who is a vegetarian), that I could not give up red meat. I just could not do it, because I love it so much. When I was thinking about what to give up, I remembered that conversation. So, I'm doing what is going to be very hard for me. I'm giving up Red Meat.

What are you giving up this Lenten Season?

Where did the 20 pounds go?

Well,I weighed in at 195.4 this morning. I have lost exactly 20 pounds since the first of the year! So where did they go?

First, as you know, I have starting running. Although I only have a distance PR of 1.5 miles, I run three days a week. I think that has a lot to do with my weight loss.

Second, I cross-train, I have a Stretch and a Strengthen routin that I do on days I'm not running.

Third, I'm also watching what I eat. Here is what I usually eat in a day:

Breakfast: 100% Whole-Wheat Honey Bagel with a little honey - ~300 Cal.

Lunch: Soups - I keep the soups around ~110 Cal. per serving, I have two servings

Dinner: ~8 oz. portion of Chicken, Fish or Beef, push a vegi or baked potato: ~500-700 Cal.

Snacks: I have two (sometimes three) snacks throughout day. I eat trail-mix or 100 Cal. packs. For the trail-mixes, I look for serving sizes to be about 1/4 cup at about ~150 Cal.

So, that is where the 20 pounds went.

Distance PR! 1.5 Miles!

1.5 Miles... 39 Degrees... 18 MPH SE Winds...

Today I ran outside for the first time!

I also had my longest non-stop run: 1.5 miles...

...Okay so I had to stop for a minute, because I little dog started chasing me. As soon as I stopped and turned to look at him, he got scared...lol. I stood there watching his owner run around trying to get the dog to go inside. Every time time I started running, he would come after me.

I think I'm going to starting carrying Pepper Spray. Now I wasn't freightened by this dog, but was anouyed that he wasn't on a lesh and I had to stop running. What I am nevious about, is I saw a couple bigger dogs in fences...one was a Pitbull. No offence to Pitbull owners, but we have had several attacks in our area lately!

I donned my recently purchased tights and long sleeve base layer. Over that I had on Shorts and a running shirt.

Things I learned:

1. When the weather channel says, “Feels like 30,” they mean “Feels Really Cold!
2. When the weather channel says, “18 mph wind,” they mean "Very Windy!
3. I need to invest in running gloves, hands were really cold.
4. I need to invest in a running jacket. The wind cut thought the Shirts.
5. Need to wear something over my ears, when its cold and windy.
6. The end of our street floods when it rains really hard the night before.
7. I run faster outside.
8. It seems easier to run outside...who knew? Why is this?
9. It started to sprinkle and I didn't care
10. My New Shoes feel Great!
11. I'm glad I got tights.
12 . What it feels like to run outside when its cold, wet and windy: Fantastic!

Oh, yea...Dogs like to chase you.

Registered For My First 5k Today

Today I registered for my first 5k, however there has been a slight change in plans. Well, I think I found the first 5k that I'm going to run in. It will be the
Second Annual ARBOR DAY 5K in Historic Nebraska City, the Home of Arbor Day.

Once part of J. Sterling Morton’s estate, the trial highlights many acres Morton and his family planted and nurtured for years. The run begins at the Nebraska City High School, traversing a portion of Steinhart Park, Arbor Day Farm and through the amazing Arbor Lodge State Historical Park.

The race is on April 28, 2007 and starts at 8:30 am. If you are near the area, you should look into the race. The area that the race goes through is really beautiful!

They have not posted the information on the net yet, but you can contact Lori Sterling the Project Coordinator of NC Tourism & Commerce, Inc. at loris@nebraskacity.com

Still No Running

Even though I feel a lot better, I'm still waiting to run until Saturday. But that is going to change very soon!

No Running Until Saturday : (

Well, my groin feels a lot better than it did this morning. It was getting better, then this weekend (after being in a car for over 16 hours) it came back. Well today, using my new New Balance 857's, I stopped 2 minutes into the run. I'm really bummed.

Today I was suppose to run 1.5 miles (I'm a beginner). As soon as I started running, it just didn't feel right and I could tell my stride was not the same.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm not going to run until Thursday or maybe even Sat., to see what happens.

BTW, the new shoes felt great!

Thanks!

New Running First

Well, today I had a runner first. I went to a professional running store and got fitted for running shoes. This is a first for me. My current pair of shoes came from Foot Locker and I got them based on price...cheap!

After walking, standing, measuring and probing (just joking), they came out with seven boxes of shoes. For those of you that have never been fitted for shoes, here is what happens. Once inspecting your feet and stride, they determine what kind of shoe you need. In my case, I found out I needed a Stability shoe. They then bring out several brands of that type of shoe.

Here is the fun part. They put one brand on one foot, then another brand on the other foot. They have you walk around a bit, then have you tell them what you like and dislike about both. Then, they have you tell them which one of the two you think you like best. After you choose the one you like, they take the one you do not like off, then put on another brand, leaving on the one that you liked the first time around. They repeat this process, until you have tried on all the brands they brought out.

Now, two things that I have been told and read about: Never buy a shoe buy looks, price, ad or brand name. Buy the shoe because it feels the best on your feet!

Well, the New Balance 857 felt best for me:

I know they look a little cluncky, but they felt really good. They are snug around my heels, but there is plenty of room for my toes. They have a lot of cushion, too. I had to buy inserts for my current pair of shoes.

Any ways, I think tomorrow I'm goin back and getting them. I wanted to look online and look at reviews and compare pricing. They retail for $95, but I can get them for $81.50. That's about $5 less then what I have found online, plus no shipping! Also, I have read nothing but great reviews on them.

I'll let you know if I get them!

On the Road

Today we are in Iowa City, traveling to Chi Town to visit my brother-in-law. When his team’s 2006 season ended late last fall, so did Garrison’s career.

Even so, the former offensive lineman can bench 415 pounds and run the 40-yard dash in 5.2 seconds. Not too shabby, by all accounts, and even Garrison’s friends seem impressed.

“He’s a physical specimen. Just rock solid,” a male friend offers and three others quickly agree.

But according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s calculations, Garrison, 21, is not in shape; he’s obese. Standing just a hair above 6 feet tall and weighing 255 pounds, the young man’s body mass index (BMI) is 34.6." (Click here to read the rest of the article from MSN.com)

Okay, I know that I am overweight, but I don't think I need to be under 165 pounds, as the BMI suggests. I was once under 175, I was so small, friends and family will tell you that I looked like a cancer patient. Part of that my have been not eating right (or not eating enough...college). But I know that is just too small for my body.

So how do you figure out what you should weigh? Well, don't think about it that way. There's two numbers that I have read to look at.

1. Body Fat Percentage - is an estimate of the fraction of the total body mass that is adipose tissue (or referred to as Fat Mass), as opposed to lean body mass (muscle, bone, organ tissue, blood, and everything else) or referred to as Fat Free Mass.

According to Wikipedia, "The percentage for women is greater than that for men, due to the demands of childbearing and other hormonal functions." The recommenced percentage for women is 20-21%, but up to 31% is acceptable. The recommended percentage for men is 13-17%, but up to 25% is acceptable.

NOTE: You can get a hand-held unit for under $15 at target. It may not be the best or have all the bells and whistles that more pricier models have, but it will get you started.

2. Waist-to-Hip ratio - is the ratio of the circumference of the waist to that of the hips. It measures the proportion by which fat is distributed around the torso.

According to Wikipedia: "A waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) of 0.7 for women and 0.9 for men have been shown to correlate strongly with general health and fertility. Women within the 0.7 range have optimal levels of estrogen and are less susceptible to major diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and ovarian cancers. Men with WHRs around 0.9, similarly, have been shown to be more healthy and fertile with less prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

WHR is a better measure of assessing a person’s risk of heart attack than Body mass index (BMI). I woke up before the alarm went off and was almost ready to run. I say almost, because being new to running, I haven't gotten to the point where I enjoy running. Don't get me wrong, every day I'm starting to enjoy it more and more, but I don't jump out of bed and say, “Yes! I'm going to run!” There is still a little dread left in my mind when getting up, but it is getting easier though.

So I get dressed and start my warm up. Immediately, I feel different. The dread is there, but not as much as normal. I do a mental body check and everything is feeling good. I don't have any of the first five minute doubts or any unexplained feelings. I found myself thinking, today is going to be a good day. Then it started...

Before I tell you what happened, let me just inform you that I have just finished reading John “The Penguin” Bingham's book “No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to the Joy of Running.” I must tell you this is an excellent book. If you are thinking about getting into running or if you are a beginner, this is a must read.

In it he talks about firing your inner critic. He tells a story of a particular race where the voice inside of his head changed and he could start to hear faint sounds of encouragement. I'm not going to tell you his story, but I will tell you it starts on page 175 of the copy that I own. He also asks, “What kind of voices do you hear inside your own mind?”After thinking about it a bit, I knew most of the time, they were not really positive voices. So, I decided I would try to make those voices positive, not negative as in the past.

So I just finished the book a couple days earlier, and here is what happened. The voice inside my head changed and I wasn't even trying to change it!. I no longer heard: “Why are you doing this?” “Stop, you are not a runner,” “ Your body is not meant for this,” etc.

I started hearing: “Wow, you're looking good,” “Keep it up, you're doing great,” “You are now a runner,” etc. They were words of encouragement. The were motivating me to finish the work-out, to get to the end of the one mile mark. They made it the easiest run this year! Looking back, I don't think that I ever had those positive words in my head before. Sure I've ran longer than a mile before, but I never had the mental encouragement that was there today. It was amazing! So much so, that I now know, I am a runner.

I'm asking everyone to listen to the voices in your head when you are running. What are they saying? Are they encouraging, or are they negative? If they are negative, try to replace them with motivating words. Trust me, if you do, your next run may be one of your best runs yet.

I am a Beginner.

I have been trying to start running off and on for about three years now. I would have never called myself a runner, but have started many running plans. I never had a problem starting them, it was following them that didn't work. Well, at the first of the year (Jan. 2, 2007), I decided to try again. But this time, I made my own plan.

I reviewed other plans that were out there. I did not follow what someone said in a book, website or magazine, but I used them as guidance. See, in the past, all of the plans that I followed progressed too fast for me. I would get to a certain point in a plan only to give up, because I couldn't keep up. This time I put pride aside and modified some plans to come up with my own half-marathon training plan.

So far it is working great! I'm on day 40 and I'm not pushing myself too hard or too fast. I'm increasing my mileage, when I feel like it is right for me, not when someone else thinks it should be increased.

If you are a beginner, I suggest you use all those plans that you have found, seen or purchased and customize them to you and your level. If the plan is moving too fast, slow it down. If it says to increase your run by a quarter of a mile, increase it by an eighth. Put pride aside and do what feels good to you.
